Soil pH and aridity influence distributions of branched tetraether lipids in grassland soils along an aridity transect

چکیده
Branched glycerol dialkyl tetraethers (brGDGTs) are membrane lipids of certain soil bacteria, and their relative distributions used as a proxy for air temperature pH. While is recorded by the degree methylation, pH reflected amount internal cyclization abundance 6-methyl isomers. Since exact producers brGDGTs remain enigmatic, mechanisms underlying empirical relationships with pH, thus reliability brGDGT-based paleorecords, not well understood, especially in arid regions where mean annual precipitation (MAP) less than 500 mm. Here, we evaluate influence aridity on brGDGT grassland soils along an transect (MAP = 173–415 mm) Inner Mongolia. absolute fractional increases increasing aridity, following trend global surface calibration dataset, does not. This indicates that regions, reconstructions based contribution likely more reliable those cyclization. Furthermore, 5- respond differently to supporting prior suggestions distribution could be result changes bacterial community composition instead direct physiological alteration molecular structures source organisms. Analysis same Acidobacteria, phylum hosting potential source-organisms, shows poor relationship aridity. Instead, Verrucomicrobia (r2 0.70, p < 0.01), its subclass Spartobacteria 0.01) particular, show significant negative correlation resembling 5-methyl brGDGTs. Similarly, Actinobacteria positively correlated 0.59, The ability cultures produce iso-C15:0 fatty acids serve building blocks hints possibly soils.

Aridity Index in Songnen Grassland, Northeast
Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) plays an irreplaceable role in regional dry/wet 15 conditions under the background of climate change. Based on the FAO Penman-Monteith method 16 and daily climate variables, ET0 was calculated for 22 stations in and around Songnen Grassland, 17 northeast China, during 1960-2014. The temporal and spatial variations of ET0 and precipitation (P) 18 were comprehen...
متن کاملSoils of Namaqualand: Compensations for aridity
The soil mantle in Namaqualand is immature in terms of weathering. Despite or even because of this, the diversity and spatial variability of soil physical and chemical properties is exceptionally high and could be fundamental in governing biodiversity and ecosystem function. In arid landscapes, the way the soil sheds, admits, stores, diverts and transmits water is crucially important. Namaquala...
متن کاملIncreasing aridity, temperature and soil pH induce soil C-N-P imbalance in grasslands
Due to the different degrees of controls exerted by biological and geochemical processes, climate changes are suggested to uncouple biogeochemical C, N and P cycles, influencing biomass accumulation, decomposition and storage in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the possible extent of such disruption in grassland ecosystems remains unclear, especially in China's steppes which have undergone rapi...
متن کاملAnnual plant–shrub interactions along an aridity gradient
Annual plants in semi-arid and arid areas are often closely associated with shrubs. The degree of association largely depends on the balance of negative and positive effects between these contrasting plant life-forms, ranging from interference to facilitation. Since positive interactions are predicted to become less important with increasing rainfall, the interaction balance is expected to shif...
متن کاملPrecipitation and aridity index regulating spatial patterns of vegetation production and species diversity based on alpine grassland transect, Tibetan Plateau
31 Although the relationship between the aboveground net primary production (ANPP) and species 32 diversity (SR) have been widely reported, there is considerable disagreement about the fitting 33 patterns of SR–ANPP, which has been variously described as ‘positive’, ‘negative’, ‘unimodal’, 34 ‘U-shaped’ and so on. Not surprisingly, the effect-factors including precipitation, aridity index and 3...
